Ever-Expanding Topographical Narratives Oscillating Between Ambiguities, Speculations and Variation

This semester we are broadening our horizon in many ways, expanding our drawing-scape especially in terms of contextual conditions, spatial narratives, speculations and transformations. For the first time, we are dealing with a variety of scales ranging from the architectonics of a detail to urban topographical fields. Sometimes, they are as palpable and as tangible as it could get, sometimes as blurry and ever-changing as it could be in an imaginary landscape of a dream. Surely, we are stepping into an ambiguous field whereby we are encountering manifold unknown conditions, collisions, densities, languages and formations… Still, we are relying on our ever-expanding alphabet of lines while questioning its means with each step. Meanwhile, we are creating our own individual, but also collective cosmology of possibilities.

Together, we have explored an extensive literature of palimpsestuous relationships consisting of layers of drawings and notations in relation with each other through manifold transparencies, opacities, overlaps, cuts and splits. We have investigated diagrammatic narratives as flow, transformation, projective variations and trajectories being its foundation. Based on these explorations, we have discovered the possibilities in animated – spirited – spatial narratives. We have searched for its correspondences in alternating scales and stepped into a larger scale, whereby we encountered other understandings of topography. Sometimes diving into the sublimity of nature, sometimes into everyday-life tactics, sometimes into oceans and air in flow… All these encouraged us to discover our collective imagination and thus create a collaborative construction through visual conversations and negotiations.

In the midterm assignment entitled ‘Ever-Expanding Ambiguities, Speculations around a variety of Topographical Narratives’, you are invited and expected to explore this ambiguous realm, we are trying to discover and create all together.
