In Spring 2021, we have been in a world of many worlds. • Assignment 01 • Line I Plane l Void • Inspired by the childhood game Marble Labyrinth at the very back to formulate the design problem, students are expected to recreate their 3D rule-based spatial game as an introductory project in the digital realm of Rhinoceros 3D. They design 3 seed cells of 1000cm3, iteration rule(s) to combine these 3 and to populate an imaginary box of 90cmX50cmX70cm. The aim is to create a system of voids thinking on positive and negative space that unfold each other. It is a playful exploration of motion, space and variety of voids through linear and planar elements. Enjoy! •••• Ps. The game itself is never declared to them, but became hidden. ••••

The Assignment 01 has a 2nd phase titled Plane l Void in which students are supposed to challange themselves  to identify a system that can also be developed structurally, spatially and physically.  AS01.02 is a parallel session to re-think / re-form / re-design / re-construct / re-scale the line l plane l void system and its elements through hands-on experience. Now, they are expected to examine transition techniques from 2D planes to 3D relations, achieve structural rigidity with surfaces and edges, and design a solid-void system by using only planes. It will be a back-and-forth process. Students will be both in digital and tangible world. They will operate digitally and manually at the same time.

What to do is that:

Firstly, students should select a part of their digital model, which they think best exemplify their rule-based system they have created of voids. They should pay attention to resolution, proportional balance of solids and voids, hierarchies of voids and their relationships with each other while deciding this part. The chosen part should not be less than 40% of your design. Then they will reconstruct this part by using only planes.  They will start off with a 50x70 cm corrugated cardboard. They will be operating by cutting, scoring and folding. Their plane can be cut but cannot be cut into parts. The plane can be folded, shaped or scored but the integrity of the plane must be maintained. Nothing should be thrown away or be added to it. Connections or tabs should be fashioned only from the plane itself. They can use wire to reinforce the cantilevering parts in their design.
